⛺ Camp   💧 Water   🅿️ Trailhead
Route C — Spence Ridge Loop ~22 mi total · ~6,000 ft gain · River crossing · NO CAR SHUTTLE
Fri · Day 1
~5 mi · ↑1,800 ft
Wolf Pit TH → Shortoff summit → north to Chimney Gap camp
⛺ Chimney Gap — sheltered saddle, warmer, wind-protected
💧 Fill at Gully Pipe Spring (mi 1.5) — carry 3L/person to camp
🌌 Partial sky through canopy · Seasonal seep (unreliable)
Audible: camp at Shortoff summit (~2.4 mi) if behind schedule — best Milky Way spot
Audible: push to Chimneys ridge (~6.5 mi) if fast — open sky but long water carry
Sat · Day 2
~9.5 mi · ↑1,200 ft ↓2,500 ft
Chimney Gap → Chimneys → Table Rock → Spence Ridge → river crossing → gorge floor camp
Big day — Chimneys scrambling + ridgeline + descent to river
⚠️ RIVER CROSSING at Spence Ridge — check USGS gauge <100 CFS
⛺ Riverside camp south of Spence Ridge · 💧 Unlimited river water
Start early. Mostly net downhill after Chimneys.
Sun · Day 3
~8 mi · ↑2,500 ft
Gorge floor south → MST U-turn at river → 1,700ft climb to Shortoff → Wolf Pit TH
⚠️ Gorge trail has Helene blowdown — expect ~1 mph in bad sections
⚠️ MST goes SOUTH to river crossing then climbs NORTH 1,700ft (no switchbacks — hardest section)
💧 River along gorge floor, Gully Pipe Spring on Shortoff descent
🚗 Back to your car at Wolf Pit — NO SHUTTLE NEEDED

🚐 Day 3 Shuttle Options

  • 2-car shuttle (free): Drop a car at Table Rock (Rte A) or Wolf Pit (Rte B) on Friday before starting. Drive ~20 min between trailheads via FR 210 / NC-181 / NC-126.
  • Jog for the car (Rte A): FR 210 winds far east of the gorge — the road distance is 10+ mi. Doable but ambitious (~1.5-2 hrs running). Bring trail runners.
  • Paid shuttle (~$30-50): No dedicated shuttle service. Post in the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area Facebook group a few days before — locals offer informal rides. Also try r/NCTrails on Reddit. Call ranger station (828) 652-2144 for current recommendations.
  • Bike stash: Lock a bike at one trailhead, hike through, bike back to car. ~20 min ride on forest roads.
  • Uber/Lyft: Unreliable — very rural, no cell service in the gorge. Don't count on it.

💧 Water Strategy

  • East rim is DRY. The #1 issue. Carry 3L/person + 2L/dog minimum.
  • Gully Pipe Spring (mi 1.5 on Shortoff trail) — most reliable east rim source. Fill everything here.
  • Chimney Gap seep — seasonal, don't rely on it.
  • Table Rock Gap spring — check when you arrive.
  • Gorge floor (Rte B only) — unlimited river water, filter required.
  • April rains improve odds but never assume a source is flowing.
  • Bring backup purification tablets.

🌌 Milky Way Conditions — Apr 10-12

  • Last Quarter Moon Apr 10 — waning crescent by Sat/Sun, sets earlier each night.
  • Best window: midnight–5 AM after moonset.
  • Galactic core rises SE around midnight, climbs through pre-dawn.
  • Linville Gorge is Bortle 2-3 — among darkest skies on East Coast.
  • Night 1 camp matters most: Shortoff (Rte A) and Hawksbill (Rte B) both have open summit exposure facing SE. Hawksbill has full 360°.
  • Bring red headlamp to preserve night vision.

🐕 Dogs on the Trail

  • Dogs allowed — 6ft leash required at all times. Pack out waste.
  • Shortoff ascent (Rte A Day 1): Good for dogs, steady climb.
  • Chimneys (Rte A Day 2): Some scrambling — may need to lift dogs over rocks. Keep leash short near cliffs.
  • River crossing (Rte B Day 2): Cold water (~50°F), rocky bottom. One adult per dog. Be ready to release leash if dog panics.
  • Gorge floor (Rte B): Heavy blowdown — repeated leash clip/unclip over logs.
  • Budget 2L extra water/dog/day on the dry east rim.
  • April = snake season (copperheads, timber rattlers). Leash helps.

⚠️ River Crossing (Route B only)

  • GO conditions (all must be true):
  • USGS gauge below 100 CFS (check here)
  • No rain in prior 48 hours
  • Water below adult knee-depth, bottom visible
  • NO-GO → default to Route A if gauge >150 CFS, murky water, or recent rain.
  • Protocol: Unbuckle hip belts. Adults scout first. One adult per child, angled upstream. River shoes required (not barefoot). Dry layers ready on far bank.

🎒 Gear Checklist

  • 2 tents (family of 4) + ground tarps for rock camping
  • 30°F sleeping bags — nights will be 35-45°F at elevation
  • Water filter + backup purification tablets
  • 3-4L water capacity per person + dog bowls
  • Bear hang kit (rope + carabiner + stuff sack)
  • Red headlamp for stargazing
  • Trail runners/sneakers (for road jog option or river crossing)
  • Rain gear — April showers possible any day
  • Trekking poles — essential for Chimneys scrambling + river crossing
  • Offline map: Gaia GPS or AllTrails with Linville Gorge topo
  • No cell service in the gorge
